BHUTAN TOURS

Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked nation in South Asia. It is located amid the eastern end of the Himalaya Mountains and is bordered to the south, east and west by India and to the north by Tibet. Bhutan used to be one of the most isolated nations in the world, but developments including direct international flights, internet, mobile phone networks, and cable television have increasingly opened the doors. Yet, the government takes great measures to preserve the nation's traditional culture, identity and the environment. The landscape ranges from subtropical plains in the south to the Himalayan heights in the north, with some peaks exceeding 7,000 metres (23,000 ft). The population is predominantly Buddhist, with Hinduism being the second-largest religion. The capital and largest city is Thimphu. After centuries of direct monarchic rule, Bhutan held its first democratic elections in March 2008.

Due to the relatively low elevation of the Yarlung Valley and which is almost 400 feet 120 meter lower than the Lhasa Valley. This is why we chose Tsedang on the very first day of this Tibet trip which is an ideal location to spend the day and to get acclimatize on this high altitude and getting in shape for the rest of the Tibet tour. On reaching Tsedang transfer to Hotel Tsedang, afternoon free at leisure or walk to the local market. Overnight stay in Hotel

Day 04: Drive Samye Monastery and back to Tsedang for sightseeing

After a relaxing easy day at Tsedang, our tour begins after breakfast in the Hotel. Our Tibetan guide will pick you for a short drive to Samye Monastery after an hour drive to the bank of the great river Yarlung Tsangpo (Bhramaputra) here we cross the river on a ferry which takes about twenty minutes on reaching the other side of the shore, we take a truck or whatever vehicle is available for a short ride to the Samye Monastery area. Samye Monastery, this was the first monastery established in Tibet, located on the north bank of Yarlung Tsangpo River, south east of Lhasa. It was constructed by Padmasambhava (Guru Ringboche) and Santarakshita between A.D. 763 and 775 in the reign of King Dristen Detsen. The Samye monastery was modelled on the university of Odantapuri in India and was made on a plan representing the mount Sumeru(Rirab) which is considered the axis of universe. The four pagodas in white, blue, green and red represents the four worlds in the north, south, east and west of the universe. Smaller temples represent the island between the worlds. The main temple is dedicated to Avalokiteshvara (Chenresi). According to a legend, Padmasambhava magically compelled Tibetan demons to collect stones and wood each night for construction by men during day. The Nagas (serpent deities) procured the funds. This famous monastery was the site of a major Buddhist council called "Council of Samye' held there in 792-794, Two learnt teachers, one from India and the other from China participated in the debate. India was represented by Kamlasila and China by Hashang. After the tour of Samye and its ancient Monastery and we drive back to Yarlung-Tsangpo (Bhramaputra River), after crossing this large river on a Ferry run by the motor engine, after 40 minutes of scenic float brings to the bank where our vehicle will be waiting on the Lhasa to Tsedang main highway. From here an hour and a half drive to Tshedang the growing city. Tshedang in the early century use to be the actual capital of the northern Tibetan Kingdom before it was shifted to Lhasa. Once back in the Hotel, time for another afternoon tour of the ancient monastery and Yambu lagang, the palace of Tibet's first king and the oldest building in Tibet. Many of the historical sites and monasteries near Tsedang are now mostly in ruins or have disappeared. Ancient Tibetan legend belief is that near Yarlung Valley, there is one of the four most sacred peaks in Tibet. Near its summit is the cave where the bodhisattva Chenriz, in the form of a monkey-king, mated with an ogress to create the first Tibetan people. The name Tsetang means "Play ground," the place where offspring played. Overnight stay in Hotel

Day 05: Drive to Gyantse (3950m) 06 Hrs

Our tour continues with an overland scenic drive towards the City of Gyantse, we will travel for about five to six hours. From Tsedang we drive on the same road to the Aiport for a while, after reaching the bridge, our route continues towrds south.During this day we cross two high passes, including the Khamabala (4,800m) and Karo La (5,200m/17,000ft). Our journey continues towards Shigatse the second largest city in Tibet after Lhasa. Today's ride covers 95 kilometers. The road has recently been improved from the bumpy and rutted portion. After leaving the Gyantse The road follows the Nyang Chu River passing through many scattered farm villages and fields, enroute Shigatse we take off from the main highway for a while, to visit the old Shalu Monastery built by the Mongolian Emperor, which is situated in a tributary valley of the Nyang Chhu, about 4 kms south of the Gyantse-Shigatse Highway. The turnoff is a few hundred yards beyond a small village called Tsunde, near the base of a barren ridge. The peaked roofs of Shalu can be seen rising above the flat plain from the highway. The courtyard of Shalu Monastery is a dazzling display of colour amidst the naked reddish brown hills surrounding the valley. The site was established as a religious center in the 11th century, though the main temple in the courtyard, all that remains of the monastic complex, was built in the early 14th century. Tiled peaked roof lines and intricate wood working of Shalu are not typical of Central Tibetan architecture and reflect the strong influence of the Mongol dynasty during that era. After an hour here, our drive takes back on the main highway towards Shigatse, when in Shigatse we visit the very large complex of Tashilumpo monastery. Ganden to Samye Trek

“Adventure at the Roof of the world”

The trek to Samye Monastery from Ganden is one of the most beautiful and pleasant trek with steep uphill route, it can be quite strenuous because of its high altitude of over 5000m passes of Shuga La (5,240m) and Chitu-La (5040m/16,700ft) the Trek from Ganden heads south reaching the first ridge at 4,510m. After an hour walk, the trail continues due south across the valley leading up to the first pass, Shuga-la, after the last village of Hebu. On the first few hours of trek there are few places where you need to cross the streams and creeks. The trail passes through nomads and Shepherds camp with the hill side dotted with marmot’s dens. The dwarf rhododendron along this area is delightful and beautiful sight during the summer when it’s in bloom in miniature bouquets of pink, white and purple.

As the trek passes through beautiful country and meadows of green carpets, camp is made where there is creek nearby on the summer pastures. Before Chitu-la there is a small glacial lake, after the pass the trail follows the creek all the way to the Samye valley through the Yamalung pilgrimage site of the Nyingmapa sect, as you come to the village of Nyango. A good three hours walk from here brings you to the first great Buddhist Monastery in Tibet, at Samye founded in 775 A.D.

Recommended Accommodation:

Good accommodation choice will in no doubt enhance your tour experience. Our well-established partnership network with key hotel chains in Nepal, India and Tibet will bring you the benefits of competitive hotel rate and guaranteed room availability.

We pick hotels for you based on:

Location: geographically convenience values for your precious holiday time. So properties we use are either in downtown area close to main city attractions and amenities, or convenient for sightseeing or transportation. Facility & Service Quality: all hotels are inspected strictly and regularly, must be with great performance on accommodating English speaking customers, and excellent feedbacks from our pervious clients as well. Diversity for Choice: many styles and grades of hotels are available for different budgets, tastes and culture backgrounds.

Hotel Criteria for Each Tour Class

Note: Bhutan is less developed with fewer hotels criteria for choice, and most of the hotels there aren't as high standard as those in Western society.

Hotel Arrangement for Standard Tour Class

Usually conveniently located and meet the basic requirements of a comfortable stay: decorative lobbies and nice guest rooms with AC, TV, hot water, shower and private bathrooms. On-site restaurants may be average in size but offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. In most cases, staffs have basic command of English. Usually 3 star hotels are adopted.

Hotel Arrangement for Comfortable Tour Class

Normally you'll stay at formal and large hotels conveniently located with shopping, dining and entertainment facilities nearby. Quality service, fully furnished rooms, restaurants, room service, fitness center and swimming pool (in some cases there is no pool) all together offer an above-average accommodation experience. Usually good 4-star hotels are adopted or boutique hotels at request. Hotels best available will be arranged if no qualified choice, e.g. in remote area.

Hotel Arrangement for Superior Tour Class

Usually properties are conveniently located with shopping, dining and entertainment facilities nearby and offer a better service and hotel facility than that in hotels of Comfortable Tour Class. Usually 4-4.5 star hotels or boutique hotels are adopted.

Hotel Arrangement for First Tour Class

Deluxe hotels with high-end service and an extensive range of facilities for an excellent accommodation experience. Multiple restaurants on site with extensive menus for choice, room service available 24/7, fitness center and concierge service round out the experience. Usually 5 star hotels are adopted.

Hotel Arrangement for Deluxe Tour Class

The most luxury hotels are used and only available in some particular cities. These properties have top-notch service and unique location, such as a lake or a historic site, and usually incorporate some of the country’s most exquisite architecture traditions. Usually top 5 star or the best available hotels are adopted.
